Where is Mongolia? The fascinating country of Mongolia is situated in the plateau of Central Asia at an average altitude of 1580 meters above sea level, which makes Mongolia one of the highest countries in the world. Mongolia is huge and land-locked nation bordering China with 4.673 km in the south and Russia with 3485 km in the north, occupying territory of 1.567 million sq. km, which makes it the 18th largest country in the world. The land and population ratio is 1 sq.km: 1.6 persons.

Altai Tavan Bogd

Geography of the country is characterized by great diversity with the Gobi Desert to the south and with cold and mountainous regions to the north and west and forest to the southwest and northeast. There are 4 high mountain ranges namely Altai, Khangai, Kentii and Khyangan. The Altai mountain range is Mongolia's largest and highest located in the western part of the country and is an ideal place to take trekking and mountaineering trips. This range of mountains stretches for 1500 km. The highest point is the Khuiten Peak in the Tavan bogd massif in the far west at 4,374 m (14,350 ft). The basin of the lake Uvs Nuur, shared with Tuva Republic in Russia, is a natural World Heritage Site. The lowest point is the lake Hoh Nuur depression at 560 meters above sea level. Much of Mongolia consists of vast boundless steppes, dominating in eastern and southern parts of the country; the largest one is called Menengiin Tal (2500 sq.km).

Mongolia’s best travel routes and attractions are classified into 6 main categories by the geographical locations: Ulaanbaatar and around, Southern Mongolia – the Gobi Desert region, Western Mongolia, Central Mongolia, Northern Mongolia and the Eastern Mongolia – Great Eastern Plains.
